Data management

b_150_150_16777215_0___images_stories_data001.jpg Planning and implementing research and then efficiently managing the resulting data are often considered very separate issues. Many researchers sometimes consider data management as a technical and an (un)necessary evil, whilst data managers consider the careful collection, management, long term storage and dissemination of research data as vital for the effective use of research funds. Unfortunately data management is often insufficiently planned or is assigned a low priority within research programs resulting in data being ‘lost’. Within the ASBD project we will ensure that this is not the case and address the issues of data management from the start of the project.

The objectives of the data management work package will be to ensure that:

  • data management procedures and protocols are established through a data management policy document taking into account commercial and academic sensitivities; the document will address both short and long term usage and storage for the data
  • data standards are established including addressing nomenclatural issues, ensuring compatibility with standard taxonomic checklists (European Register of Marine Species – ERMS - http://www.marbef.org/data/erms.php);
  • data exchange within the project is facilitated;
  • linkages are developed with external data programs including:
    • Arctic Web (OADC)
    • EurOBIS/OBIS – http://www.marbef.org/data/eurobis.php
